In 2026, the PROSA Centre of Expertise will once again present the PROSA Paolo Valerio Award to the team with the most inspiring and successfully implemented initiative in the field of procedural comfort for children. The award is presented every two years during the PROSA Congress and recognises teams that contribute to child-friendly care through innovative ideas and strong commitment. Teams from the Netherlands and abroad are invited to participate.
On this occasion, we briefly look back at the winners of 2024. The team from UZ Leuven received the award during its first edition. The jury, composed of an interdisciplinary group of PROSA faculty members, selected the team as an inspiring example. This nurse-led team had been dedicated to procedural comfort for over ten years and, in that year, supported more than 1,500 children in a safe and child-friendly manner. Thanks to their extensive experience with intranasal dexmedetomidine, many procedures could be performed safely and without trauma, often without the need for anaesthesia. What once started as a small initiative has since grown into a well-embedded and highly respected part of the hospital.
